Jamestown Substance Abuse Prevention Task Force Meeting

Present: Jessica Bucklin, Sue Earley, Brianne Heavey, Rebecca Heavey, Melissa Mastrostefano, Barbara Szepatowski, Andrea vonHohenleiten

Guests: Bruce Long, Nate Nordstrom


I.                   Call to Order – The meeting was called to order at 6:11 p.m.

II.                Minutes – The minutes from the previous meeting were presented by Laura.

Barbara made a motion to accept them, which Sue seconded. The motion passed unanimously.

III.             Treasurer’s Report – Laura presented the Treasurer’s Report. She talked about funding for the student assistance program. It was recommended that she get on the agenda for the school committee/town council meeting. She showed the group the Task Force’s plan and the SALT statistics for Jamestown and North Kingstown. Laura also talked about how MHRH doesn’t want the Task Force to fund student assistance, even though the state funds most of the other schools’ student assistance programs and doesn’t give anything to Jamestown. Barbara made a motion to continue funding student assistance and work on environmental projects as needed. Brianne seconded the motion and it passed unanimously. Melissa made a motion to accept the Treasurer’s Report, Rebecca seconded it, and it passed unanimously.

IV.             Old Business

A.    Student Assistance – Stephanie will be coming back to the school in November.

B.     Teen Center – They need help with the Halloween Party at the Fire Department. Barbara will send out an email. There will be an Invisible Children showing on October 24 in the High School.

C.     Juvenile Hearing Board - The group hasn’t heard anything about the juvenile hearing board idea. Barbara has an upcoming meeting with Chief Tighe and will bring this up. One of the teenagers said that kids are stealing gum and little cigars from Xtra Mart. Bruce said that he would go in and talk to them. Barbara will find out about the owners and if they are planning to keep the business.

D.    Legislative and Policy Initiatives - Bruce gave the history of the consumption law and Laura talked about the Narragansett ordinance.       

V.                New Business

  A. Other - Laura talked about the situation with the state task forces.

   Laura got a letter that there was a complaint about smoking at the   

      Post Office. Andrea volunteered to go in and check it out.

VI.             Next Meeting – The next meeting is scheduled for November 19 at 6 p.m. in the Teen Center.

VII.          Adjournment – Jess made a motion to adjourn the meeting, which Sue seconded. The motion passed unanimously. The meeting ended at 7:30.
