Getting Started on your Web Page

back to training home

So your ready to create a classroom web page.  Fantastic!

What program should I use to create my Web Page?

To create a front page or a page with complex formatting and images it is best to use a program geared for creating web pages. While "best" program is Dreamweaver, this program may be a bit of an overkill and difficult for the average user to learn. A good compromise for creating and editing web pages is the composer module of Netscape or Mozilla. The newest versions can be downloaded from the indicated sites. Unlike Netscape version 6 the newest version of Netscape (version 7.2) and Mozilla can edit the font type.

Netscape and Mozilla composer are virtually identical. The following Netscape / Mozilla tutorials may be helpful.

Microsoft Word can also be used to create web pages While Microsoft Word 97 created simple pages in a reasonable fashion, it may be wise not to use Word 2000 or later to create web pages The code Word 2000 creates is very complicated and difficult to edit. Word is very effective in creating web document of rubrics and other classroom resources.

Spin a Web is a helpful tutorial on using MS Word to create a web page.

Where should I put my Web page.?

All files should be put in a folder.  You are encouraged to place your web pages along with any graphics used in your class folder inside the classes folder in the class Web Dev folder.  You find this folder in the Teacher folder on the stn server.  Note that the names of all web pages or pictures should be one word names containing 8 characters or less.

Are there any templates the help me get started?

Yes!  In the classes folder you will find the folders sample1, sample2, sample3 and sample4 containing templates.  You can double click any of the home.htm files in the folders to view the page. If you decide to use one of the templates copy all of the files from the folder to your class folder.  See the on of the above tutorials.

Grabbing graphics?

Most graphics you see on the web can saved to your hard drive.   Place your cursor over the graphic to be captured.  Click the right mouse button (or click and hold on a Mac) and select "save picture as" from the pull down window.   Save in the folder containing your web page.

Getting your new pages up to the internet?

When your web pages are finished they will need to be sent up to the server that houses the school site.  Contact Bruce Engelhard (ride9479@ride.ri.net ), Samira Hakki ( rid24649@ride.ri.net ) .  They will be able to send your files up to the school site and link your page to the Jamestown School Home page.
