Jamestown School Committee Work Session: April 8, 2004

Discussion/clarification of school names: Superintendent Katherine Sipala reported to the committee on school name discussions held with the school improvement teams and staff. Audience member Ginny Perry shared her view that the name Jamestown School (no "s") best reflects the history and unity of the two staffs, curriculum and buildings. The committee discussed the possible benefits and ramifications of changing the designation of "junior high" to "middle school." Also discussed was the committee’s previously stated goal of giving Lawn Avenue School its own, strong identity – a factor in the committee’s decision to locate the superintendent’s office in that building. The committee agreed that any discussion of school names should involve the community. Mrs. Sipala will write a column on the topic for the local papers and further discussion will be scheduled for an upcoming school committee meeting.

The next business meeting of the Jamestown School Committee will be on April 22. All meetings are held at 7 p.m. in the Melrose Multi-Purpose Room.
