Jamestown School Committee Meeting: November 20, 2003
Discussion of School Budget 2004-2005: Superintendent Katherine Sipala presented the school fund and capital reserve budgets. The committee asked questions about individual line items and suggested reducing the figure for legal services by half, to $15,000. Mr. Brennan proposed that the committee adopt a "walk before you run" philosophy in considering any addition of operations personnel or technology staffing hours. Mrs. Gooding suggested a comparison of Jamestown’s operational expenditures with those of other "like" communities and asked to have available at the next meeting the Information Works breakdown of per pupil expenditure by instructional and leadership/operational costs. During a discussion of capital projects, Mr. Brennan suggested that the committee consider increasing the figure budgeted for bathroom renovation at Lawn in order to complete the project during the March 04-June 05 fiscal period rather than spread the work over the next two budget cycles. Addressing the entire project will require a larger scale involvement by outside contractors and thus cost more. The committee agreed to continue this discussion at the December 4 meeting, following a meeting with town administration to discuss the budget reporting format and future bonding opportunities.
The next budget work session of the Jamestown School Committee is scheduled on December 4. The next business meeting is scheduled on December 11. All meetings are held at 7 p.m. in the Melrose Multi-Purpose Room.
