Jamestown School Committee Workshop: September 8, 2005

Continuing Discussion: Reorganization, Restructuring, Shared Services

Working with Superintendent Sipala and facilitator John Pini, the school committee identified the concerns behind the continuing discussion, i.e., how the Jamestown School Committee, in the face of changing enrollment and mounting fiscal constraints, will respond to rising expectations for quality of education. School committee members reviewed a list of possible topics for discussion and agreed on the need to explore all options in order to determine their feasibility and merit. Discussion will be held at upcoming work sessions. At the October 6 work session with the town council, agenda items will include the possible coordination of building maintenance with the town and consideration of locating the town hall in part of Lawn Avenue School. At the November work session, the committee will look at the reorganization of administrative services and the position of principal at Lawn. In December, the focus will be on class size. Discussion of all topics will be ongoing. Possible longer-term discussion areas include regionalizing with another district, evaluating a K-8 model, and re-locating grades 6, 7 and 8 off-island. A taskforce studying the feasibility of shared services among South County school districts will report its findings in the spring. The feasibility of regionalizing special education services will be one focus of that study and will be part of the Jamestown discussion.

The next business meeting of the Jamestown School Committee will be on September 22 at 7 p.m. in the library at Lawn Avenue School.
