Jamestown School Committee Work Session: May 7, 2009

Presentation

4th Grade Advertising Posters and Logo Designs: Introducing the fourth graders, art teacher Jan Kraus explained that the students’ assignment was to imagine oneself with a physical disability and to propose a device that would facilitate daily life. Four students shared their concepts and accompanying advertising posters and logo designs with the school committee. Superintendent Marcia Lukon commended the lesson as being an excellent example of a quadrant D lesson.

Proclamation: Teacher Appreciation Week

Town Councilor Mike White read the following council proclamation dated April 30, 2009:

Whereas, the Town of Jamestown recognizes the important influence Jamestown teachers have on the future of our children and thus on the future of our community and nation; and

Whereas, Jamestown teachers are charged with the all-important task of ensuring that no child is left behind in our schools; and

Whereas, Jamestown teachers are committed to providing a rigorous and relevant curriculum that prepares our students to be lifelong learners, problem solvers and decision makers; and

Whereas, Jamestown teachers should be accorded high public esteem, reflecting the value our community places on public education;

Therefore, we, the Town Council of Jamestown, Rhode Island, hereby proclaim May 3 through 9 Teacher Appreciation Week in Jamestown and urge all citizens to pay tribute to our teachers.

Workshop Discussion Topics

Policies: The committee completed first readings of policies on employee illegal harassment; student sexual harassment and dating violence; and kindergarten admission. Second readings will be held at the May 21 business meeting. The committee also completed a first reading of a school parties and celebrations amendment to the student nutrition policy. Committee members asked that a statement of the rationale for prohibiting food at school parties and celebrations (during the school day) be added to the amendment. The second reading of the amendment will be held at the June 4 workshop meeting and will be advertised in the Warrior to allow parental input.

The next business meeting of the Jamestown School Committee will be on May 21. The next workshop meeting will be on June 4. All meetings are held at 7 p.m. in the Lawn School Library.
