Jamestown School Committee Work Session: February 5, 2009

Workshop Discussion Topics

Continued Discussion of the FY10 Budget: Superintendent Marcia Lukon responded to the school committee’s request that the administration prepare a “broad brush” priority list of reductions to be made in the event of cuts in state aid. Dr. Lukon confirmed that the administrative team had identified and prioritized reductions to respond to any potential loss of state aid. She noted that passage of the governor’s supplemental budget and/or the federal stimulus package are “unknowns” that could offset in part a loss in state aid. Because of these “unknowns” and because the administrative team does not consider the identified reductions to be in the best interest of students, she recommended to the committee that targeted reductions not be formally presented until the extent of aid loss is known, i.e. until FY10 state aid appropriations are determined by the legislature. Ms Kaiser proposed that committee members accept the administration’s recommendation and continue to review the budget on the table that assumes level-funded state aid and maintains the current level of services for students. The administration responded to committee questions on individual budget line items. The school committee will continue its review of the budget on February 12 and will vote at that meeting or at the February 26 business meeting.

The next business meetings of the Jamestown School Committee will be on February 12 and 26. All meetings are held at 7 p.m. in the Lawn School Library. The budget hearing with the Town Council will be on March 3 at 6:30 p.m. at Town Hall.
