Jamestown School Committee Workshop Meeting: November 4, 2010

New Business

Jamestown Teacher Association Contract: The committee tabled this item to allow the union time to share the terms with its membership and seek contract ratification.

Personnel: The committee approved by unanimous vote the extracurricular appointments of Leland Brown as jazz band director and Kevin Deacon as girls’ basketball coach.

Workshop Discussion Topic

NECAP Scores: Principals Melucci and Almanzor shared a three-year history of district and state NECAP science scores and led school committee members and town council liaison Mike White in a hands-on challenge to complete an inquiry question from the 8th grade exam. The science scores (available on the RIDE website) show Rhode Island trailing NECAP states New Hampshire and Vermont at all levels (4th, 8th and 11th grades). At both grades 4 and 8, Jamestown exceeds the state mean and shows continuing improvement over the past three years. The principals agreed, however, that there remains room for improvement. The ensuing discussion of strategies focused on student familiarity with science question terminology as an important area for improvement, along with the need for students to fully develop responses with specific and relevant details.

The next business meeting of the Jamestown School Committee will be on November 18. The next workshop meeting will be on Thursday, December 2. All open meetings begin at 7 p.m. in the Lawn Avenue School Library.
