Call to Order: Ms. Kaiser called the general meeting to order at 7:03 p.m. and led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Ms. Kaiser called the Roll Call. All Present.

Public Forum: No one signed in.

Unfinished Business: None.

Information and Proposals:

Superintendentís Report: Mrs. Sipala brought to the attention of the School Committee the final 2003-02 School Budget complied by Mrs. Alfred.

Mrs. Sipala stated that she and Ms. Pinto visited and toured Middletown High School this past week.

Mrs. Sipala referred back to Mr. Brennanís question last meeting regarding the cost of heating fuel for this year. Mrs. Sipala stated that our heating cost is down from last year and that our electrical cost is half of the previous yearís budget allotment.

Mrs. Sipala informed the School Committee that the schools are classified as Class 2 buildings and were inspected last Friday. She stated that in general the review was a good one, but some things need to be seen to. Mrs. Sipala stated that Exit signs at Lawn Avenue need to be replaced. The emergency lights need new batteries, decorated materials will need to be sprayed, and two fire extinguishers need to be purchased for the Science Lab. Mrs. Sipala stated that all doors to classrooms and offices must be closed at all times and that all small appliances need to be removed from the classrooms. Mrs. Sipala will be addressing the faculty next week regarding these issues. Discussion was held.

Mrs. Sipala stated that she would be meeting with Chief Tighe next week regarding the use of the schools as shelters in the event of chemical warfare.




New Business:

Key Work of School Board Discussion: Collaboration: Mrs. Sipala informed the School Committee about a proposal to the Rhode Island foundation from SORICO Task Force for the continuation of Key Works. Ms. Maureen Cotter, a member of the Task Force spoke briefly regarding this proposal. Discussion was held.

Mrs. Sipala spoke on the presentation she and Ms. Kaiser made to the RI General Assembly regarding non-funded mandates. Mrs. Sipala stated that Representative Long represented Jamestown admirably. Discussion was held.

Ms. Kaiser started the discussion on Collaboration with the Business Community.

Mrs. Sipala spoke on the Superintendent getting to know and being known by the business community.

Mrs. Keen suggested inviting the Chamber of Commerce to have a meeting at the school.

Mrs. Sipala mentioned the Rotaryís May Breakfast being held in May to be a good opportunity to meet members of the community.

Discussion was held on community service for middle school students.

Mrs. Gooding suggested the business community being involved in the schoolís strategic planning.

Ms. Davis suggested acknowledging what the business community has already given to the children of Jamestown.

Mr. Brennan stated that the School Committee tends to be demagogic by always inviting groups here. He suggested that we ask to attend their meetings.

Mrs. Gooding suggested a Recognition Evening with refreshments and music by the students.

Ms. Kaiser stated that we need to know what the workforce is looking for.

Mrs. Keen stated that only good things can come from people understanding each other.

Mrs. Sipala stated that she wants our image to be strong and for the community to be proud of the school. Mrs. Sipala stated that we need to build a business collaboration base in order to work toward their involvement in the strategic plan.

Mrs. Sipala asked if she should start meeting with small groups of the community and asked for suggestions. Discussion was held.

Business Meeting: Not needed.


Adjourned: Mr. Brennan moved and Ms. Davis seconded to adjourn the meeting at 8:13 P.M.
