Meeting Minutes
February 16, 2006
Present: K. Almanzor, L. Carlisle, B. Hawkins, M. Keen, J. Mitchell, C. Petrocelli, S. Schott, N. Santamour, J. Warner, E. Covell, J. Filkins, J. Krauss
1. The committee was informed that the budget vote would take place this night, and that Cathy Kaiser had made an extended visit to Melrose.
2. Communications Committee.
A letter was sent to the Town Council from the SITs and all other school-related committees in support of the budget.
A letter to parents regarding the new Everyday Mathematics program will go out in the mail with the curriculum guides. There will possibly be scheduled a review of the Everyday Math program with teachers and parents.
3. Academics Committee.
Items being reviewed included:
a survey for parents regarding their opinion of the DLP's (Differentiated Learning Plan),
providing an opportunity at a Teacher's meeting for all teachers to discuss DLP's together to both evaluate them and to receive support from each other---how it is working, problems they are having, help they need in working them into daily schedules, brainstorming, etc.
reviewing SALT survey results,
incorporating learning other languages--
providing tapes or paying for site through the library for other languages, such as Spanish for students possibly through JEF funds,
possibly using the sixth planning period time (second grade) when children use the computer labs under L. Casey's supervision as time for children to work on other language learning.
M. Keen will complete an application for a mini-grant through JEF.
4. Service Learning Committee.
Food Drive:
A school-wide food drive for the St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantry located at St. Mark's church. Topics discussed included:
Targeting April for the food drive.
Having older children help the younger.
J. Krauss having children work on visuals.
Providing a “thermometer” chart to track drive.
Using the first grades seedlings for the Community Farm.
Next Meeting March 16, 2006, 4:00 until 5:30.
