The
month of May is Better Speech-Language Hearing Month. The following list was distributed by the
Rhode Island Speech-Language Hearing Association to celebrate speech and
hearing wellness.
**
Be kind to your vocal cords. Avoid
yelling. Otherwise you might develop
laryngitis or growths on your vocal cords.
**Talk
to your babies and your children. They
learn language by hearing it spoken.
**Loud
noise can permanently damage your hearing.
Never play your music so loud that you cannot be heard over it. Use earplugs when you use loud equipment, such
as a lawnmower or when attending rock concerts.
**If
the noise from a toy makes you wince, it's too loud. Don't let children put any toys that make loud noises next to
their ears.
**If
your child has frequent middle ear infections, ask your pediatrician to refer
you to an audiologist for a complete hearing evaluation.
**Never
put anything, including cotton swabs, in your ear canal.
