2006-2007 Accomplishments
1)
Held
nine business meetings.
2)
Presented
SELAC at Melrose and Lawn Schools Fall Open Houses. Introduced SELAC and provided parents a welcome letter and
SELAC calendar.
3)
Hosted
first ever SELAC Open House with focus on increasing membership, informing
parents on special education system at Melrose/Lawn Schools, and providing
informal question/answer opportunity with IEP team members and/or SELAC
parents.
4)
Co-chairs
met with new superintendent to introduce SELAC chairs and open lines of
communication.
5)
Served
as advisory and support committee to Director of Student Services.
6)
Provided
input on areas for school improvement:
a.
Increase
summer staff awareness of our school district policies/procedures as a result
of personnel being summer temporary employment.
b.
Need
for air conditioning during summer school program.
c.
Improving
availability of role models during summer school
7)
Advocated
for the School Budget through verbal and written input. Formal SELAC statement supporting the
special education budget was presented to the School Committee and submitted to
the Jamestown Press.
8)
Sponsored
fifth annual 2007 Jamestown School Education Awareness Day featuring Rick
Lavoie.
9)
Wrote
and received a Jamestown Education Foundation Grant for Awareness Day Speaker;
received PTO contribution for Awareness Day.
10)Increased community awareness regarding the SELAC
mission/goals, the efficacy of our current school system and the positive
impact these have on all children/the community through public relations via
Jamestown Press.
11)Facilitated coordination with Jamestown Fire Department,
Police Department, and EMS regarding development of registry for children with
special physical and/or psychological needs.
12)Coordinated presentation by North Kingston High School to
interested Jamestown parents regarding special education children transitioning
from Lawn 8th grade to NK 9th grade.
13)Attended NK SELAC business meetings.
14)Updating Tri-Fold Brochure to make the current brochure
less intimidating and more parent-friendly.
15)Update of SELAC website ongoing.
16)Identified need for informal SELAC Parent Support Group.
17)Kept members informed of educational workshops on
learning challenges in the local area.
