Our Mission

At the Melrose Avenue Preschool, it is our intention to provide a safe, clean, stimulating and nurturing environment in which all children can reach their full potential.  A developmentally appropriate program and curriculum are implemented with attention to the unique individual differences of each and every child enrolled in the program.  Stimulating, challenging materials and well integrated activities are provided for the children to foster growth in the areas of personal/social development, language and literacy, mathematics, social studies, science, the arts, and physical development including health and safety.  In addition the children learn to interact positively with each other through inclusion in an appropriate social group while receiving positive guidance from the classroom staff.  Each child is encouraged to participate in, and contribute to the group experience in his or her own way.  At all times positive dispositions including curiosity, humor, creativity, and affability will be modeled, encouraged, acknowledged and appreciated.

 

The Details

The Melrose Avenue Preschool is an inclusive, multi-aged program for children aged 3 through 5 and is part of the Jamestown School System.  The program runs five days per week.  Monday through Thursday there are two sessions, morning and afternoon.  On Friday there is only a morning session.  There is a maximum number of 14 children per session with 6 slots reserved for children with special needs.  The classroom is arranged into learning centers that support a variety of developmentally appropriate activities and experiences including but not limited to a block area, an art area, an imaginative play area, a science area, a discovery/sensory area, a circle area or gathering place, a quiet area, a writing center, and a math/manipulative area.  The daily activities are planned by the preschool team following our standards based curriculum and the individual needs and interests of the children enrolled in our program.  The preschool staff function as facilitators to make sure that the children are provided the optimal environment and opportunities for learning in their own individual manner at their own individual level of development.
