Curriculum Back to JS Home
Our
curriculum is actually a three fold curriculum.
The first and most important basis for our teaching decisions is our Preschool
Standards. These are based on what children should know and be able to do
at this age. This piece is what helps us design our general year long plan
on what we want to teach the children.
The second part is the emergent piece, which comes from the children themselves.
Through careful listening and observations, we are able to focus on the
children's interests and input into what they want to learn about.
The third piece is the thematic piece which comes from the children's ideas and
is supported by our standards. For example, in the month of September we
are carefully focusing on the area of Personal Social development, creating a
caring community of learners. We know from our standards what children
should be able to do and from that we have devised a list of observable skills
for the classroom. If during our activities to teach these skills the
children demonstrate an interest in trees, we will develop a tree theme,
incorporating the Personal/Social skills we are trying to teach. In this
way we always make sure the activities in our room are high interest for the
children. There may be several different projects or themes going on at
any one time to make sure all the children remain actively engaged
Our standards are posted on the wall right next to our weekly lesson plans so
that parents always have the resources to check what we are teaching.
Progress reports, done twice a year, are directly connected to the standards
