 Nightly Reading:

Please read every night with your child. Find books that your child is interested in including non-fiction books. Make reading part of your nightly routine. Find a cozy spot and enjoy the quiet moments with your child. Reading every night with your child along with your interest in reading will surely promote a lifelong love of reading!

***Starting in late October or early November, book bags will be sent home to read with your child. There are games, puzzles, or small items that go with the book. Please keep all the items together and return in the bag after enjoying the story. Also, small books will be sent home to be read three times before being sent back to school for a new book. These books will be read at school with the teacher, assistant, or helper before being sent home. Please help your child by pointing to each word, looking at the picture for clues, and at the beginning and ending letter. These books will get progressively more difficult as the year goes on.

Spelling:

Please ask your child periodically to spell little words such as we, it, in, is, the, and, for, on, off, but, by, etc. We are using these words in Writing Workshop more and more frequently. These words are called sight words and most do not follow any spelling pattern but need to be learned as they are the most frequently used words.

Math:

Approximately once a week I will be sending home a family homework sheet. The activities listed for the week will correlate with what we are doing in school. They are meant to be done as a family and to be enjoyable and fun. At the same time, your child will be reinforcing certain skills being worked on throughout the year. I also encourage you to explore numbers in anyway possible. For example while driving count with your child 1-10 or higher if your child is able, at home or in a store point out any numbers you come across, and put a variety of objects in front of your child and ask him or her to make groups of 1, 2, 3, 4, etc.
