This year students will read a variety of literature. Literature will be read in class, in circle groups and at home. There will be times a specific genre is selected for an assignment and there will be times your child may select a book for pleasure. Within our reading program a variety of skills will be taught and others reinforced. Individual skill development is an important piece of the program since each child is different. Comprehension, application, analysis, synthesizing and evaluating are learning skills we will continuously be developing. Most importantly, as a teacher, it is my goal to find pieces of literature that provoke the students to become involved and think. Allowing students the opportunity to connect with the imagination and written words of an author then formulating their own thoughts and perceptions will be on going. It is my hopes that students have fun, laugh, and question, agree, disagree and express themselves while learning through reading.

Reading is the doorway to so many worlds.

We often will read Time For Kids and newspapers.

Book Reports

Each month a book report book will be expected. A specific genre will be assigned for that month. Students usually have 3 weeks to read the book and a week to complete the book report, if not more. The books read will be a variety of different genres through out the year. Sometimes the report may be a written or a creative project, an interview or a verbal presentation. A book on tape will also be completed as a book report. The book reports will give the students about 10 completed pieces of read literature and responses that may be added to their reading logs.

Classroom/ Independent Reading

As a class we will complete 5-7 novels, read short plays and some stories from Jr. Great Books. The students should continue to pursue their independent reading. As the end of the school year approaches each student is required to have read 25 books. This number is based on the Grade Level Expectations. If you are interested in copy of the Grade Level Expectations please let me know and I will send you a copy.

Reading Logs

As students finish reading pieces of literature each child will create a reading log. This log will be a culmination of summaries and opinions based on the pieces of literature your child has read throughout the year. The reading logs will be a continuous project as the year progresses. When students complete a piece of literature they will add it to their log. We often work on the mobile laptops or go to the Selinger Computer Lab to update their logs.

The logs consist of the name of the book, the author, a brief summary and the reader's opinion supported with information from the book. You will be asked to help your child edit the log once or twice a year. I strongly recommend that your child start his/her log during the summer. Summer readings may be counted towards the completion of the 25 books. At the end of the year a final copy of each student's log will be passed to the 7th grade language arts teacher. Your child may have a copy if he/she would like.

Homework

Your child will have homework in reading on a nightly basis. Even with written homework he/she should be reading a book for about a half-hour a night or more. Our Library Media Specialist, Mrs. Casey, is fantastic. She will be able to help your child find a book of interest at a reading level that is appropriate. Utilize our library web site. The site contains many areas that will guide your child as he/she moves through 6th grade.
