Beavertail Lighthouse Museum Operating Hours

The museum will be open 10 am - 4 pm, seven days a week, June 22 through September 2. From that date until October 14 it will be open noon to 3 pm on weekends. According to Bill McCraw, chairman of volunteers at the museum, 85 people have signed up to interpret the exhibits, staff the museum and the newly enlarged gift shop.

New Museum Exhibits

The Jamestown Historical Society has loaned us the plaque that was mounted on a stone column near the original Beavertail Lighthouse foundation. In 1991, Hurricane Bob toppled the column and damaged the plaque, which has been repaired. The plaque is housed in a sturdy frame specially built for that purpose and donated by Jack Willis of North Kingstown.

Another new addition is an interpretive panel which outlines the history of the Beavertail Lighthouses. It is located in front of the museum. This panel has been generously donated by Marilyn Mattera in memory of her husband, Donald Mattera.

Ferry Days Exhibit

 BLMA volunteers will be offering various Beavertail Lighthouse merchandise for sale, including all the new items listed later in this newsletter, at the June 29 Ferry Days Celebration from 10 am to 4 pm. COME VISIT OUR TABLE.

Second Grader Wins Beavertail Lighthouse T-shirt Contest

 Alex Carlisle, a second grade student at Melrose Avenue school received an award from BLMA for his crayon drawing of the lighthouse. All second graders took part in the contest. Alex's drawing has been reproduced on T=shirt being sold at the museum. The award was presented by Anthony Faria, BLMA president, and June Luedke Webb, chairwoman of the merchandise committee. Alex received a monetary award as well as a T-shirt from the first screening.

BLMA Annual Meeting

 The BLMA annual meeting will be held at the Jamestown Library on Tuesday, September 10, 1996. The election of officers (President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary) and three Board of Directors members will be conducted then.

Famous author of books and poems, Elinor Dewire, will be the featured guest speaker.

The meeting will be open to the public.

Nominations for Officers/Directors

 Nominations may be made by any Director, the Nomination committee, and any BLMA member in good standing. All nominations must be in writing and must be submitted not later than August 12.

New Merchandise Available

 During the past winter the Merchandise Committee, headed by June Luedke Webb with assistance from Diane Faria, Dave Clem, and Joe Logan redesigned and expanded the sales room. New shelving was added and additional merchandise acquired.

A new T-shirt designed by second grader Alex Carlisle is available in children's sizes 2-4 on up to adult sizes. The original logo for Beavertail Lighthouse is featured on tote bags as well as the ever popular line of sweatshirts and T-shirts. Also new this year is a navy blue polo shirt with an embroidered Beavertail Lighthouse logo similar to that on the ball hats.

New this year, too, are etchings of Rhode Island lighthouses by Jamestown artists Jeanne Bunkley, Evelyn Rhodes, and Josy Wright.

Exclusive with us is jewelry copied from the design of the button on the Lighthouse Keeper's jacket. It is available as a pendant, earrings, and a pin.

A number of new titles have been added to the selection of books. These feature people who lived in and tended lighthouses. Several publications are available for children to learn about the life at the seashore

The proceeds of all sales go to maintain the Museum. All help is volunteer.

Naturalist Program At Beavertail Again This Summer

 Beavertail Lighthouse Museum Association will again sponsor the very popular and fascinating Tidal Pool Excursions programs. Pat Venable, teacher and experienced biologist. Each program will last an hour and is suitable for all ages, although children under 10 should be accompanied by an adult. There will be NO advance reservations this year and each group will be limited to 15 persons on a first come, first serve basis.

The first program will be held on Sunday, June 30 at 1 pm.

 It is again time for membership renewal. The Board of Directors recently designated a new category of membership - LIFE MEMBERSHIP - for $100.00. If your mailing label indicates that your membership expires in 1996 it is time to renew for the period July 1, 1996 through June 30, 1997.
